Self-service analytics has been all the rage for the past ten years in the business intelligence (BI) space and has now reached a pinnacle. Due to the rise of inexpensive cloud data storage the amount of data available is now in the zettabytes - truly a number unimaginable to the human brain. This self-service model is no longer sustainable. Finding data insights is analogous to millions of people using their metal detectors at the beach searching for treasure hidden deep beneath the shore. As datasets grow and the number of data sources continue to increase, It’s time to drop the metal detector and get a more powerful tool.

The role of the data analyst has grown considerably as they are now responsible for data governance, data normalization, query building, report producing, dashboard developing, and then maybe in their spare time they can actually get some analysis done. A more casual business user who doesn’t have a data-literate background can be overwhelmed using a conventional BI tool. It doesn’t align with their skillset and the goal of their role within the organization. They shouldn’t be spending their time building out reports and dashboards while trying to spot issues and identify opportunities. A dashboard and a report are components of the data story and without strong data literacy skills it can be challenging to ascertain what is the main point of the information presented.

Better yet - push these insights to the end user via email, text, or Slack instead of requiring the user to log in to yet another platform. Let’s meet them where they already are and spend most of their time. Let’s bring their attention to the problems that need to be solved today. Let’s offer up insights that make recommendations, not just serve up “fun facts”.
